Anshutz on Anatomy
Etching, 1912, 188 x 228 mm., Morse 155 viii/viii, ex collection: Mrs. Thomas P. Anshutz, 1912 (not in Lugt). Superb, early (printed by Sloan) impression on white wove paper with full margins, signed in pencil and annotated "Working proof. To Mrs. Thomas P. Anshutz with kindest regards. Dec. 1912, John Sloan"; traces of old tape in the top margin and a few pale stains in the margins. The famous image shows Anshutz lecturing with a skeleton and a male model. Among the artists pictured listening to him are William Glackens, Maurice Prendergast, George Bellows, Robert Henri and Sloan himself and his wife Dolly. Anshutz himself died in June of 1912, just too early to have received an impression of the print himself.
