Environs de Gravesend, Souvenir de la Tamise (Near Gravesend, Remembrance of the Thames)

Etching, with drypoint and aquatint, 265 x 348 mm., Bourcard/Goodfriend 157 iv/ix. A fine impression of this working state in which the standing figure at the right is mostly erased and the monogram is just barely visible, on laid paper with full margins; slight paper darkening in the area of the old mat opening and old glue around the edges of the sheet, far from the image. The partial erasure of the figure at the right and the light etching of the one behind him, contrasted with the strongly-etched remainder of the plate, is unexpectedly effective and gives the print something of a ghostly, mysterious appearance.
