Landscape with Trees

Air-brush drawing on thin imitation vellum, ca. 1935, 299 x 454 mm., signed in pencil with monogram. Massen (original name Madsen) was born in Denmark, came to the United States, and became an American citizen in 1935. He was primarily a painter and specialized in geometric abstraction, and his paintings have been exhibited at the Chicago Art Institute. One would guess that this undated sheet preceded his purely geometric works, but even so, there is the fascination here of seeing landscape through the eyes of someone who would become a pure abstractionist. Neither place, time, mood, nor weather enter the picture. Memory is completely transformed. What remains is composition and style – nature as Art Deco.
