McBey, Antwerp

Antwerp

Etching, with touches of drypoint, 1923, 211 x 330 mm., Hardie 214 published state, edition of 76. A very fine impression in dark brown ink, with manipulated plate tone, on old, greenish laid paper with full margins, signed in ink and numbered A20 from the total edition of 76. The city is seen from the opposite bank of the Scheldt. McBey was born far too late to have ever had personal experience of Whistler, but admiration for the latter's work is clearly evident in his etchings - at least from the time he might first have seen a Whistler. McBey's Venetian Series was clearly a tribute to Whistler's, though without any conscious effort to ape the manner, but even this view of Antwerp, pure McBey as it is, would not have been precisely what it is without Whistler.
