Schultheiss: The Flight into Egypt

The Flight into Egypt

Engraving, 77 x 51 mm. Very fine, fresh impression on thick wove paper with full margins, signed in pencil, as published by The Miniature Print Society in a limited edition, in their original mat and envelope with the printed commentary. Schultheiss (not to be confused with the almost identically named German artist Karl Max Schultheiss) was born in Nuremberg and was an established painter, etcher and engraver before he came to America in his thirties. His work is traditional, both in style and in the long-standing German tradition of precise, meticulous draughtsmanship and print-making technique. Given the tiny size of this engraving, one sees it as a twentieth-century successor to those of Hans Sebald Beham and other Little Masters who also, coincidentally, were from Nuremberg.
