Les Oies (The Geese)

Etching, drypoint and aquatint, 1887, B/G 166 v/vi, 153 x 255 mm. Very fine impression of the "completed" state (state vi is from the cancelled plate) on laid china paper with large margins, backed with thin japan, signed in pencil and inscribed "epreuve d’artiste." All the details have now been worked out, the shadings and tonalities finely adjusted and new elements added. The composition is essentially the same but the image is totally different. One would be hard put to choose, from the two, a single impression to represent the print in a collection. Together they offer a splendid demonstration not only of Buhot’s working methods, but of his view of what a print can be.
