Les Vespres (God, the Father)

Engraving, hand colored, ca.1602, 160 x 91 mm., Heller N.D., B.N. Inv. N.D. Fine impression of a page from an engraved missal, text verso, superbly hand colored and gilded, with added borderlines. God is portrayed standing in the clouds, surrounded by angel heads, wearing a papal crown and with a triangular nimbus. As opposed to woodcuts, engravings in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, apart from topographical pieces or works of natural history, were not commonly hand colored. When they were, it was usually a special project, bringing to bear the highest skills of the colorist and usually involving the application of gilt.
