Souvenir de Toscane (Remembrance of Tuscany)

Etching, ca.1845, 130 x 182 mm., Delteil 1 iii/iv, Melot 1 iii/v. Provenance: KAR (not in Lugt). Superb, atmospheric impression with varied plate tone, on laid paper with good margins. The distinction between the 2nd and 3rd states is the rounding of the plate corners in the latter. This is exceedingly difficult to tell, but it is assumed here that they are rounded. Corot apparently drew on and varnished the plate, but it was not bitten until 20 years later when Bracquemond discovered it in a box of nails. All impressions, therefore, are from 1865 or later. Melot mentions "heavily printed" impressions of the third state, presumably as here. Impressions before the Gazette des Beaux-Arts edition (state iv) are scarce.
