Paris and Oenone

Engraving. Bartsch 37, Hollstein 84, 275 x 332 mm., ex collection: Truesdell (not in Lugt). Fine, rich impression on laid paper with an unidentified watermark (apparently a flower surmounting a column), trimmed to the subject but complete and with the full lower border and text; a few tiny nicks at the edges and slight traces of a vertical fold. TIB's dimensions are of the image only. Oenone was a naiad or water nymph and was beloved of Paris before he knew of Helen – which introduction, of course, precipitated the Trojan war. He is seen here carving Oenone’s name in the bark of a tree, the mythic origin of this ancient form of declaring love.
