Pilot – Lots

Etching, 1919, 178 x 119 mm., Asplund 285 only state, Hjert & Hjert 286. Fine impression on laid paper with full margins, signed in pencil. Although the Etching Revival was basically a phenomenon of France, Britain and the United States, no account of it can omit the Swedish artist Anders Zorn. Painter, sculptor and etcher, Zorn rose to international prominence with his portraits, genre scenes and depictions of perhaps-excessively-healthy nudes. His etching style, bold, often slashing, is virtually unmistakable. His travels put him in the way of portrait commissions in many countries and his etchings found their way into virtually every major public and private collection in the world. Few etchers have enjoyed such financial success. Pilot is a typical nude scene, but for all the emphasis on the figures (not so over-developed as many), it is the treatment of the moving water and its distortions of light and shadow that is quite remarkable. Zorn’s etchings are, apparently, in and out of fashion, but it is worthwhile noting that our price is $1000 less than the most recent auction price for the print.
