The Gypsy Woman

Etching and engraving, Wurzbach 159, LeBlanc 154 iii/v, Dutuit 44 iv/v, 372 x 314 mm. Fine, rich impression, before erasure of the address of Clemendt de Jonghe, on laid paper with watermark of a fleur-de-lis in a crowned shield with sub-letter W, and with 10 mm. margins all around; trace of a horizontal center fold and a crease and tiny tear in the lower margin. Visscher, at the beginning of his short career, was a professional engraver of portraits. This, perhaps, is what gives this print something of the feeling of an engraving after a painting. It is, however, an original conception, meant from the beginning to be a print, the engraved work lending a certain formality to the etched beginning.
