Lepère, La Cité Vue

La Cité Vue du Pont des Arts (The Île de la Cité Seen from the Pont des Arts)

Etching and drypoint, 1895, Lotz-Brissonneau 99 ii/ii, 129 x 190 mm. Fine impression with retroussage on thin, yellowish, laid japan paper with full margins, signed with the estate stamp, titled and numbered in pencil and from the edition of 25. Lepère, taught by Bracquemond, shortly became a master of etching technique, as he mastered every print-making technique he essayed. But frequently he chose not to carry his etchings to a point of polished finish, but rather to give them the feeling of a spontaneous sketch capturing a momentary observation. Such is the case here. Without details of face or façade one can feel the breeze, sense the movement and know that the lady will soon pass on and the moment, and the image, will no longer exist.
