Low Tide

Etching, 1919, 125 x 135 mm., Winkler 41, edition of 75. Fine impression with a light, even plate tone on laid paper with full margins, signed in pencil. The location is San Franciso Bay. Closely paralleling many of Whistler's port scenes, Winkler finds detailed interest in the mid-ground and background and merely sketches in the foreground, as well as using the almost blank water area for depth of field. Like some of Menpes' Japanese etchings that look like they could have been by Whistler, had he stayed with his Venetian style and travelled to Japan, Winkler's looks like it could have been by Whistler had he stuck to his Thames style and visited San Francisco. And yet it is typical Winkler.
