Faiths Victorie in Romes Crueltie
Etching and engraving, ca. 1680-1700, 316 x 381 mm. An etched broadside dealing with the British Protestant martyrs of 1555-56, with a poem by Thomas Jenner, printed and published by John Garrett at the Royal Exchange in Cornhill. The work is either a copy or a reprint of Jenner’s print of ca. 1630, for Jenner died in 1673 and Garrett purchased his business. It is, at any rate, exceedingly rare; apparently only one other impression is currently known (verbal communication from Malcolm Jones). The seventeen martyrs, burned to death by order of Queen Mary, included Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, Hugh Latimer, Bishop of Worcester, and Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of Rochester. A fine impression of this grim but important subject, on laid paper with narrow margins at the sides, trimmed on the platemark at the top and bottom; a flattened vertical center fold.
