Senesino, Cuzzoni and Berenstadt in Handel’s opera “Flavio,”

Etching, 1723, 190 x 266 mm., Paulson 266 iii/iii. Fine impression on heavy laid paper with large margins, with a pencil inscription giving a different identification of the scene and singers (Farinelli, Cuzzoni and Senesino in Handel’s “Ptolomeo”.) A rare print and one of the few known depicting a castrato singer on stage in an actual opera performance. If the print is not by Hogarth, it was certainly known to him, as the image is quoted in another print by him. The only alternative authorship suggested in the literature is John Vanderbank (1694-1739).
