Johann Neyen, General of the Order of St. Francis
Engraving, 1609, Bartsch 60, Hollstein 60 ii/iii, 324 x 225. Fine impression on laid paper, trimmed to the subject but complete and with the full text and laid down to another sheet. Neyen, though a Franciscan friar, was an accomplished politician, active (though perhaps on the wrong side) in the rise of the Dutch Republic. Muller, famous for his mannerist engravings, was also, like his contemporary Goltzius, a superb portrait engraver. The skull and the winged (no less) hour glass, symbols of Vanitas, emphasize that time is fleeting, and the crucifix exhorts one to live a Christian life.
