Smith, The Virgin Mary

The Virgin Mary

Mezzotint, 1684-5, Unrecorded in Nagler, Chaloner Smith, Wessely and LeBlanc, 174 x 114 mm. A fine impression on laid paper with thread margins. This beautifully handled little print is here largely because of its rarity. Apparently unrecorded by anyone, it was published by Edward Cooper and, because it lacks the royal privilege, which Cooper obtained in 1686 and used ever afterwards, it must have been made and published in 1684-85. It ostensibly reproduces a painting, or part of a painting, by the French artist Sébastien Bourdon, though we have been unable to locate such a painting and the work just might be an original conception by the engraver, purposely mislabeled. The print is lacking in the vast British Museum collection of Smith’s work. It has no profound religious insight to convey; it is, rather, an image of pure sensibility.
