Altdorfer, The Resurrection

The Resurrection

Woodcut, ca. 1513, from Sündenfall und Erlösung des Menschengeschlechtes, 74 x 48 mm., Bartsch 35, Hollstein 35, Winziger 60, ex collections: Georg Hamminger (Lugt 1159) and Freiherr von und zu Aufsess (L. 2749). Very fine impression on thin laid paper showing the borderline all around; very slight discoloration at the lower left corner from an old hinge and a few brown spots on the reverse showing through slightly. Altdorfer’s woodcuts from this series remain amazing examples of fine detail work in a medium that almost defies such execution and his visual conceptions of scenes and incidents are startlingly effective. He has been called an expressionist before Expressionism and that judgment has a great deal of truth in it.
