Startling Self Portrait
Ink drawing in hand-made artist's frame, 1999, 192 x 132 mm. (framed 330 x 278 mm.). After an encounter with, and rescue of, a wounded bird, artist and bird momentarily and partly exchanged beings. Freese chose that moment for a self-portrait. With meticulous hand and capricious mind, he re-presents himself to us as an injured and bedraggled woodpecker. Titled, signed and dated verso.
