View in Jerusalem

Etching, 1672, Wurzbach 10 (as Peeters), from Ansichten aus Arabien, Judäa, Chaldäa..., 119 x 258 mm. Fine impression on laid paper, trimmed on or just inside the borderline but with the text below. The structures identified include Pilate's house, a mosque on the site of Solomon's temple and the remains of the balcony on which Christ was shown to the people. Noteworthy, and charming, is the little group of tourists, led by a guide pointing out items of interest. Nagler was of the opinion that Peeters had actually visited the Near East to make his drawings. There is apparently no proof of this, but his two nephews were known as peripatetic travellers and he may have made his drawings after on-the-spot sketches by them.
