Shakespeare: Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, Act I, Scene IV

Etching, aquatint and engraving, 1796, 484 x 624 mm. Fine, early impression on wove paper watermarked 1794, trimmed inside the platemark but with ample white space around the image and the full text below, as published in 1796 by Boydell at the Shakespeare Gallery, London. The scene is the platform before the Palace of Elsinore, showing Hamlet, Horatio, Marcellus and the Ghost. Fuseli’s Shakespearian depictions have probably never been surpassed, but the large and formerly much admired oil painting that is the source of this print is noted as lost.
