Débarquement en Angleterre

Etching, drypoint, aquatint, roulette, stop-out and added white gouache, 1879, 304 x 183 mm., Bourcard/Goodfriend 130 v/v. A unique impression on thick, brown laid paper with margins, overworked in the sky with white gouache; old glue in the margins and two marginal tears repaired. To about the same degree that Lalanne was a purist, Buhot was an experimenter, not only in the variety of techniques brought to bear on a single plate, but often with modifications of impressions, even after they were already printed. Buhot exacted a multiplicity of effects from a single plate and one impression may look dramatically different from another. The white additions here are possibly indications for future work on the plate or directions for future printings, as there are (largely unreadable) pencil notes in Buhot's hand in the right margin. But it is also possible that they are modifications of this impression alone to produce yet another, different effect.
