Ercole in Tebe: Veduta delle Mura di Tebe (Act IV)

Etching, 1661, from Delle Poesie Dramatiche di G. A. Moniglia, Firenze, 1689, 187 x 255 mm., see Kinsky 158 – 4. Fine impression on laid paper with good margins; flattened vertical fold from previous binding and small water stain at the top edge of the sheet. Ercole in Tebe (Hercules in Thebes) was a Baroque opera with a libretto by G. A. Moniglia (ca. 1630-1700), music by Jacopo Melani (1623-1676), and staging by Ferdinando Tacca (1619-1686). It was written for, and presented at, the wedding of Cosimo III and Louise d’Orléans at the Teatro degli Immobili, Firenze, in 1661. The scene shows the sort of complex staging and special effects typical of opera in the 17th century, particularly when produced for a royal occasion. Rare.
