Valley of the Aar (Canton of Berne)

Lithograph, 1851, Oeuvres de A. Calame No. 23, 205 x 278 mm. Fine impression on chine-appliqué with large margins; small tears near the sheet edge, far from the print. Calame was the greatest Swiss landscape painter and his paintings are duly prized. His superb lithographs and etchings, though, are largely unknown to collectors. And yet the man was a consummate master of lithography and his alpine views are as effective in that medium as in oils. Perhaps it is that the whole of lithographic art after the earliest works and before Lautrec is virtually ignored by collectors. Pity! We have other works by Calame.
