Repos du Modèle

Lithograph, 1922, 220 x 304 mm., Duthuit-Matisse 416 i/ii. A fine impression of the first state, before the image was reduced at the left, on laid chine-volant with good margins. The print is from the first edition of 100, only 85 of which were pencil signed. Because it is one of the unsigned ones, the price is less than half of that brought by those with the added pencil signature. The image is typical Matisse, though far more concerned with texture, pattern, light and shade and even detail than the minimalist, purely linear works. It is, however, and equally to those, basically concerned with print making as an extension of drawing.
