May and June (from a Set of the Months)

Etching and engraving, 1615, 367 x 506 mm., TIB 128, Hollstein 125. Fine impression on laid paper with small margins at the sides, trimmed along the plate mark top and bottom; vertical center fold reinforced; edge tears repaired, tiny losses in the blank margins. Paul Bril and his short-lived brother Matthijs were Flemish artists who moved to Rome while still in their twenties and became firmly established there as painter and draughtsmen, working for noble patrons as well as the Vatican. This sumptuous scene, beautifully engraved by Sadeler, is after one of a group of lost drawings by Bril.
