Description: |
Strikingly handsome and previously unknown chalk portrait of the composer Spontini, unsigned but almost certainly drawn from life in the early years of the nineteenth century and inscribed with the composer's name, on brown laid paper without watermark. Spontini, virtually idolized by Berlioz in his writings, was the composer of the opera La Vestale, perhaps unjustly the only work of his to have survived into our century. A fine drawing and a unique musical document. |
