Description: |
A very fine impression on laid paper, trimmed on or just inside the platemark, but complete; partially backed covering a well-made restoration in the lower center, the verso also with brush strokes or red and black wash. The story derives from the First Book of Samuel. Saul has secretly called upon the Witch to call up the ghost of the recently deceased Samuel, who appears and tells Saul that his armies will be defeated and he himself will be killed in the battle with the Philistines. The print is rare and was unknown to both Nagler and LeBlanc, but there are two impressions of it in the British Museum. It is clearly signed Jonas Umbach. |
