Description: |
A very good impression before the Boydell edition, rubbed in places at the upper right, on laid paper with good margins. The plate is inscribed "Design'd & Etched in the rediculous manner of Rembrandt, by Wm. Hogarth." The print satirizes Rembrandt's realism and his use of contemporaries for models. It was occasioned by the rage for Rembrandt's etchings which began n England about 1751 and was used as a subscription ticket for Hogarth's own conception of Paul Before Felix and Moses Brought to Pharaoh's Daughter (q.v.). |
