Description: |
Fine impression on thin, laid japan with small margins, titled, dated and signed in pencil; very pale paper discoloration in the area of the old mat opening. Mary Garden (1874-1967) was a Scottish-born, American soprano, the original Melisande in Debussy's Pelleas and Melisande and an outstanding Salome in the Richard Strauss Opera. She sang both at the Chicago Lyric Opera and the Metropolitan.
The print is unusual in technique, the five colors being used entirely as line, with the single exception of the black mass of hair. It is extraordinarily effective. |
