Wonderfully free and spontaneous drawing, handsomely finished in watercolor, ink and white gouache on card, signed with initials and with the estate stamp. Hildenbrandt, though German and born in Danzig, studied with Eugène Isabey and was active in Paris in 1855. He specialized in watercolor. During 1862-64 he travelled around the world stopping, for a time in California, and in 1867 he published a three-volume work based on his travels, "Reise um die Erde." He is often included among "California artists." The influence of Isabey (or simply a similar feeling and approach) is evident in this drawing, of which the subject is clearly European and probably German. |
