Description: |
Bartsch catalogs the print as wrongly attributed to Annibale Carracci and says it is by an etcher in the style of Guido Reni. A very good impression with contrasts on laid paper trimmed on or inside the platemark, the image complete but lacking the lower plate margin with the false signature "Annibale Carracci fecit"; some old creases. The goldfinch in this context is a symbol of the soul that flies away after death and is a harbinger of future events. |
