Description: |
The sketch, which occupies only one-sixth of the plate, is Daumier's only etching. The remainder of the plate comprises a landscape by Harpignies, two female head studies by Felicien Rops, and a genre scene of a couple at the piano by Taiée. The lower left sixth is blank except for the names of Daumier and Harpignies. The plate was created on May 29, 1872 at a party at the home of Bériot. A copper plate was provided and everyone invited to draw a sketch on it. The plate was published in 1878 in Champfleury's book on Daumier, but other impressions were taken. A fine impression with plate tone on laid paper with full margins, the edges of the sheet slightly browned in places. |
