Description: |
The full leaf with the two images recto, verso a cut of Suleiman the Magnificent, on laid paper with apparently old hand coloringin watercolor and gouache; the sheet somewhat browned and with spots of pale foxing. Selim II, the Ottoman sultan and son of Suleiman, was known as "Selim the Sot,"as he had little interest in governance and devoted his life to orgies. Münster's Cosmographia, the earliest German description of the world, was one of the most popular books of the 16th century and went through about 100 editions. This leaf is probably from the German edition of 1598. |
