Description: Very fine impression on laid paper trimmed to a narrow white margin around the image and with the full text, drum mounted to a sheet of wove paper. Maius in shown half-length in an oval holding a flowering herb in his right hand. The background depicts shelves of books and of apothecary's jars and bottles, as well as various laboratory apparati together with the word AZOT (azoth), the term for Paracelsus' universal solvent or first principle. Maius (1592-1671), of whom biographical material seems to be scarce, was a doctor and a professor of physics in Coburg and apparently the author of "Dissertatio medica inauguralis de passione hysterica,"published after his death in 1692.
