Description: |
Very fine impression on laid paper with thread margins or trimmed on the platemark. The portrait was done "from life," according to the inscription, hardly, since Valdez died 69 years before the date of the print. Valdez (1511-1580) was Commander of the Spanish troops at the Siege of Leiden in 1574, and a view of Leiden is seen in the background. The print is the first of four by Visscher showing individuals associated with that siege. |
