Fine, bright impression on thin laid paper with small margins, parts of the margin replaced at the left, the image intact; old glue stain verso.
Veturia was a Roman matron, the mother of the general Coriolanus. She (in legend?) persuaded her son to break off his siege of Rome. The Romans then honored Veturia for her courage, patriotism and strength of purpose. In Shakespeare's play Coriolanus, she is portrayed in the same way, but under the name of Volumnia. The incident is said to date from the 5th century BC. |
