Description: |
A head-and-shoulders portrait, finely drawn in black chalk on blue paper and signed with the monogram. Two old notes on the back identify the subject, one spelling it Veber. Though the identification is a bit chancey, examination of the drawing with a magnifying glass does show up Weber's characteristic long nose, seen here from a far more flattering angle than usual. Weber (1786-1826) was an important figure in romantic music and perhaps the first great German opera composer. This is almost certainly a portrait from life. |
