Lady Caroline Russell

Mezzotint, 1762, 360 x 252 mm., Chaloner Smith 160 ii/iii; Hamilton p. 128 iii/iv, ex collection: Albertina duplicate (Lugt 5d). Fine impression, a few miniscule white dots here and there but the surface un-rubbed, on laid paper with narrow margins; small repairs at the corners and bottom edge, not affecting the image. Smith’s second state comes at a time, probably early 1762, when Lady Russell was as yet unmarried. In August of that year she married George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough, and the third state of the plate identifies her as “Caroline, Dutchess of Marlborough.” It is said that Queen Charlotte pronounced her the proudest woman in England.
