Solomon and the Queen of Sheba

Etching, 1642, Parthey 74, Pennington 74 ii/iii, 250 x 183 mm. Superb impression on laid paper with thread margins. The etching is after a miniature on vellum now in the collection at Windsor Castle. Solomon here bears an intentional facial resemblance to Henry VIII. Apart from its political reference, the biblical source for the image is I Kings 10, but the scriptural quotation on the print is from Wisdom 6 (a book that does not appear in the King James or many other versions of the bible): "A multitude of the wise is the health of the world and a wise king is the stability of the people." A particularly beautiful and interesting print.
