Ecce Homo

Lithograph, 1946, 307 x 230 mm., edition of 100, signed, titled, dated and numbered in pencil. Fine impression on wove paper with good margins, the paper tone slightly darkened. Though the theme of Christ presented to the people occurs in all four gospels, the actual phrase, "Ecce Homo," spoken by Pilate, is specific to John 19. "Jesus then came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said, 'Behold the man.' When they saw him, the chief priests and the guards shouted, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!'" The theme was widely depicted in Renaissance art (rarely before), but it is unusual to find it in the work of a 20th-century American artist.
