La Rencontre sous la Voûte (1re planche)
Drypoint, ca. 1910, Guérin 100 only state, 308 x 419 mm., signed in pencil and annotated "1er etat." Probably no printmaker of the 20th century took Christian imagery quite so seriously as subject matter as Forain. His purpose was to integrate his Catholic faith with contemporary life and his method, for which he had ample precedent, was to set his biblical scenes in the contemporary world. Thus, in this image, Christ is robed but the two men accosting him are in French peasant dress and the pretty little French village in the background is just that, not some recreation of the holy land. The incident depicted is that of the encounter, on the road to Emmaus, of two of the apostles and the risen Christ, most beautifully told in Luke 24. A fine impression, printed in red-brown with light plate tone on heavy laid paper with large margins.
