Engraving, 1655, 318 x 241 mm., Petitjean & Wickert 156 iii/iii. Fine, sharp impression on thin laid paper trimmed on or within the platemark, the image and text complete; short repaired tear and slight wrinkling at the lower right corner and very pale staining along part of the right side. Mazarin (1602-1661) was a French-Italian cardinal and Chief Minister of France from 1652 to 1661, succeeding his mentor, Cardinal Richelieu. His library was the foundation of the Bibliothèque Mazarine in Paris. Nanteuil did a number of portraits of him.

Provenance:
Lenormand du Coudray (Lugt 1704). Charles Lenormand du Coudray (1712-1789), a resident of Orléans, was a collector of revenues and legal advisor to the King of France besides being an indefatigable collector of prints, every one of which (apparently) he signed in brown ink on the reverse with the same elegant, eighteenth-century style paraphe. He was well known in his time and mentioned in the correspondence of various artists, but he seems to have had no heirs and his vast collection was sold after his death and is now widely dispersed.
