The Virgin at the Cradle

Engraving, Bartsch 63 undescribed copy, Delaborde 11 copy 3, 229 x 173 mm., ex collection: Luciana Simonettti (Lugt 3616). A very good and even impression on laid paper with the watermark of a jug with flower, trimmed just inside the plate mark, perhaps trimmed in blank paper at the bottom, although cross hairs at the lower right corner indicate a limit to the composition. Marcantonio’s engravings, being among the most renowned of their time, were frequently copied, often by known artists, but by quite capable anonymous ones as well. Differences show up in small details, but also in facial types and expressions. St. Anne, here, shows her ostensible age far more than in Marcantonio’s original, where she is considerably more youthful.
