Pencz, Conversion of Saul

Conversion of Saul

Engraving, 1543, 75 x 113 mm., Bartsch 69, Landau 72. A fine, clear impression on laid paper with partial thread margins or trimmed on the platemark (just within at the bottom left). Saul, who became Paul, lies on the ground staring at the vision in the heavens. No horse is evident in the image, but otherwise it conforms to the famous story of his conversion save that the landscape on the way to Damascus here looks more like medieval Germany. The composition is quite beautifully worked out and the intensity of expression is unusual for Pencz.
