Feeding the Chickens

Black chalk, ca.1865, 87 x 70 mm., see Louvre, École Française, Vol. X, No. 10399. Provenance: artist's estate (Lugt 1460). A compositional sketch in black chalk on grey-blue laid paper, signed with the artist's estate stamp; a miniscule hole in the paper and a few yellowish-white spots. The work is comparable to many of Millet's small sketches, though more complex and complete than most. This one is a study for La Provende des Oisons ou le Printemps, a pastel of 1865. It should be compared with the similar sketch in the Louvre.
