Little Dorothy

Lithograph, 1896, 193 x 136 mm., Way 115, Levy 163, Spink/Chicago 147. Very fine impression, from the edition printed by Goulding in 1903, on old wove paper with the watermark H. Smith & Son 1824, with full margins. There were only four lifetime impressions and at least three of them are in museum collections. While Goulding's edition, commissioned by Whistler's executrix Rosalind Birnie Philip, was of the usual forty impressions, the print is scarce and has not turned up at auction, in any form, in at least twenty years. It is one of only two lithographs Whistler made of a child.
