Henry the Sixth, Act II, Scene IV

Etching, aquatint and stipple engraving, 1790, 457 x 585 mm. Fine impression on laid paper trimmed to the subject and just below the name Shakespeare at the base and drum mounted on another sheet of laid paper with an impressed platemark; paper discoloration within the old mat opening and dust and pale staining in the margins. The scene is in the Temple Garden with the Earls of Somerset, Suffolk and Warwick, Richard Plantagenet, Veron and another lawyer. Plantagenet asks those who follow him to pluck a white rose; Somerset asks his followers to pluck a red one. Thus (but apocryphally), the ensuing Wars of the Roses between the houses of Lancaster and York.
