Monogrammist WHN: The Riot at Covent Garden

The Riot at Covent Garden Theatre in 1763 in consequence of the Managers refusal to admit half price in the opera of “Artaxerxes”

Etching, 124 x 177mm. Artaxerxes was an opera with a libretto by Metastasio and music by Thomas Arne, and it was a smash hit in London in 1762-63, whereupon the management decided it did not have to lower ticket prices to attract a full house – with the pictured results. Oddly, this print is a later copy of the original anonymous one, issued in New York a hundred years or so after the event. One wonders what could have provoked it. A fine impression on thick wove paper with large margins; minor edge tears and dust in the margins.
