Les Musiciens (Les Chanteurs)

Etching, 1845, 422 x 358 mm., Guiffrey 25. Fine, bright impression on chine-appliqué with good margins, as published by L’Artiste; the chine is slightly yellowish in tone, which gives wonderful warmth to the image; traces of the usual horizontal center fold. Jacque is so associated with images of sheep and shepherds that one forgets that there were other kinds of life in and around Barbizon in which he might well have participated. Certainly, these are a couple of rustic boys making music at a local hostelry, and Jacque has etched them superbly here in one of his larger plates. He could, at times, be a really great etcher.
